Supporting Dictators for Democracy
The United States has a grand history of allying with Dictators to promote it’s national agenda. Dictators are great allies because they are not beholden to pesky legislators and voting populaces. The 21st Century marks no change in this shameful pattern that is almost as old as our country.
I was wondering how long it would take Americans to realize that, General Pervez Musharraf, the Bush Administration’s closest ally in the “War on Terror” (yes I have to quote that term, I simply cannot say it at face value) with the express purpose of bringing Democracy to the Middle East (to make the world safer) muscled his way to power via a military c’oup d’etat in 1999 that ousted the elected Prime Minister.
The Bush Administration painted Musharraf as a courageous hero, a balanced man of the future. They’ve given him $10 billion in military support over the last four years even though it is very widely believed that our one known enemy, Osama Bin Laden, is using the tribal areas of Pakistan as a base.
Welp, what is the Bush Administration going to do know that their Thomas Jefferson of the Middle East has staged his second c’oup and suspended the Constitution and the Supreme Court to maintain control of the country?
Insert large awkward silence here.
