For Anyone Tired of “Web 2.0″ Talk …

For anyone tired of Web 2.0 talk, I think respite is near.

As we all know in reality land Web2.0 is just Internet37, meaning it’s just one more advancement in a 40 year evolution of the internet’s server client data exchange environment.

What drives anyone crazy that works hard on the Web right now is all the hype that creeped in again. Hype is fueled by the CEOs, press, pundits and conference organizers who much prefer talking about may happen next instead of what is being achieved right now.

In the last two week a number of well funded “Web2.0″ start-ups with good connections have called it quits. Well maybe not quits, but major layoffs, departure of senior staff and new no funders. Backfence, FilmLoop, Insider Pages, Browster, and even wunderkind Flock are all in very dire straights.

Some people think we shouldn’t highlight our failures, but we need reality now more than ever. Nothing makes people more serious than death and nothing kills hype faster than a failure. Such reminders that not every cub in the litter will reach adulthood will surely cool the hypebeasts. I’d much rather return to a highly critical period then have this one grow into another anyone-can-win free-for-all.

There are no guarantees and there is no easy route. Once again you still can’t put the cart in front of the horse and the New Economy is just the Old Economy. Hyped up ideas just aren’t turning into millions like they used too. Failures are once again failing, which is good.

Maybe we can all try reality again for a while? Really, it’s not as boring as it sounds.
