My Father’s First Wikipedia Entry

A couple years ago my father learned of Billy B. Van, a forgotten vaudville and Hollywood actor from the 20’s and 30’s. Upon realizing there was no Wikipedia entry he wanted to write one. You can read it now, however it looks like he’ll need to find another photo.

As it does for anyone first using a wiki, it took him quite some time to figure out how to wikify and submit the text and photo. 5 years later and the biggest hurdle to wiki adoption is still learning how to write to one. But of course, in the end, it’s pretty easy.

So I helped him out, he’s now over the hurdle and the entry was accepted. Pretty good for a 72 year old ;>

I have a feeling this will not be the last Wikipedia hears from prheingold.

Dude, that’s cool. My dad recently retired and I’ve been trying to learn him up some on the intraweb too…he’s rocking the bloglines account, but we havn’t yet crossed that line from consumption to creation.

I’ve been thinking recently how much it seems to be a generational attitude. I mean my dad has had a great career and done some super interesting things around the world, but it’s like he thinks it would be egotistical to blog, even if it is about things he knows loads about…kind of ‘why would people want to read what I have to say’. Compare that to the current generation who create just cause they can, which makes me wish I had Pro Tools (or even Garageband), and Photoshop and Wordpress when I was 16.

I wonder if we dare just casually set them up a blog, and say it’s just for themselves or amybe a couple friends and entiice them to just start doing it!
