Have Firefox2 Spell Check *ALL* text fields

Oh my dear reader. You know I’m a big fan of Firefox2’s built in spell checker and my writing about it is not the only reason you know why. I’m a non-touch typer who pretends he is and ya’ll suffer for it.

By default Firefox2’s spell check is only active in HTML text areas, (the big multi-line typing areas) and not text fields (the one line input boxes) and my email subjects and blog entry titles have been sadly missing my spell-crazy friend.

To have your Firefox2 check spelling in both types of text fields can be done in about 3 seconds:

  • In Firefox2 open a new browser window
  • Type ‘about:config’ in the location bar.
  • Type ‘layout.spellcheckDefault’ in the filter bar (consult image above)
  • Double click on the displaying ‘layout.spellcheckDefault’ and change the default value of 1 to 2.
  • Close and restart Firefox2
