Memoirs in a Text Message

Here’s something nifty in a new direction. You can get a personal memoir text messaged to you every day for free. The memoirs come from reader contributions to Smithmag.net. The text messages are delivered via Twitter, a one-to-many texting platform.
It may seem ridiculous, but I’ve come to look forward to the tiny little udpates. On my walk to work I catch up on friends. Ditto the walk home. The kicker with the Smith Mag memoirs is that they are six words max, so you can trust me when I say, your time will not be wasted.
If this sounds like a silly novelty, you may want to find a seat, because it’s really the latent birth of an entirely distinct distribution platform. Daily text messages could just as easily be about the weather, a horoscope, or fact or new word of the day. There are already kids paying to get text messages from rappers and celebs each day.
Personally, I’m patiently waiting for the first serialized 160 character-a-day novel to start. I’ll read it each day. I don’t care if it takes 2 years to read it. I’ve always got a little time to kill and text messages are a perfect murdering device.
SMS (text messaging) will not inherit the earth or even the web. But it can be so much more than furtive teens flirting or reminders to pay your phone bill. Kudos to Smith and Twitter for making that be.
Here’s a couple Twitters I posted about it:
