Last Night I Played a 45 Year-Old Video Game

In 1961 the world’s first computer video game Space War was built at MIT. It ran on a PDP-1 (Programmed Data Processor-1) computer which was 10 feet long, 5 feet wide, 6 feet tall and capable of storing ~9k of data. Programs were entered via punch tape (ticker tape with holes punched in it.) [...]

Bruce Sterling on Cellphones

I saw futurist Bruce Sterling give a presentation tonight. His talks can sometimes lead my mind in painfull mazes (mostly because he traveres topics too quickly) but out of the blue he can say three words that I’ll think about for weeks. Overall, I’m a big fan and his talks are consistently provoking either [...]

Congratulation Oakland A’s - 2006 Western Division Champs

Congrats to the Oakland A’s for clinching the MLB Western Division title for the fourth time in seven years, the fourteenth time overall since transplanting to Oakland in ‘68.
What makes this feat amazing is that the A’s overall payroll (and overall revenue) is in the basement of all Major League Baseball. They get my [...]

The Weatherist

Surprising fact. For a year I was the weather writer for SFist, a great San Francisco blog-news-zine. Since I wrote every other week I found I could never wrtie about exact weather events, but rather the trends.
After an 8 month break, I submitted another tautological-styled weather entry, this one about the state of our [...]

Large Cave Found In Sequoia National Park

Four amateur spelunkers recently discovered a large cave in Sequoia National Park, CA. Though cave finds are not uncommon in the Sierras, at over 1,000 feet long, this one is so big they named it Ursa Minor and have promised to never specify where it is. These photos will have to do.

Photos taken by Dave [...]

Three’s a Trend and Today’s is Cars In Videos

In 30 minutes of pleasure surfing this evening I encountered three great driving-themed videos. Why not take them for a spin?
Video one is by indie rockers Citizens Here & Abroad, a newish band featuring at least one member (Chris Wetherell) of local fav Dealership. Brits should check Citizen’s UK tour dates and they’ll be [...]

Got Passionate All Up In That Piece

Last week I gave a presentation on passion-centric online communities, which are online communities like Dogster and Catster that are dedicated to a single topic or passion. There is no doubt in my mind that in a couple years there will be tens of thousands of such online communites, many of them with more than [...]

White Stripes or Michel Gondry Fan?

If so, you’ll appreciate a well done Michel Gondry video spoof on this week’s Simpsons complete with a White Stripes cameo.

I’m sure this is an illegal reuse, but honestly Fox, don’t have a cow. If this clip doesn’t entice one of my readers to start watching the Simpsons again, I’ll take Bart’s advice and eat [...]

Banksy show in L.A.

Banksy is an English stencil artist that uses subversive messages in a personal quest to make society improve itself. Historically he distributed his work by surreptitiously stenciling his art messages in major cities, and even went so far as to surreptitiously hang his artwork in major museums.
He’s having one of the first shows I’ve [...]

Wasn’t no Taquitos in Chaffing Dishes

I was invited to the August Ventures Annual last night. It was a swell affair.

I think the trout sums it up nicely. This was no taquito-in-chaffing-dishes grabfest. I even got to joke at the end “I am getting so tired of waiting in valet parking lines.”
I saw two people last-named Haas, quite a few [...]
