Audio Mashups Came First
In spirit, I love audio mashups. They speak of creativity, exploration and fun. But 99% of them end up being nothing but novelties, kind of like dipping french fries in a vanilla milkshake. Yes it can be done and it has an interesting taste but not a better taste than either individually. Since audio mashups are not remixes the two (or worse three) songs’ beats end up competing with each other for control of your groove bone. So in the end you can’t really do much with it but let the sound waves come to an end.
Today, however I heard one of the 1%. The song choices are not risky, but the beats become seamlessly one. If you were at a club you would know instinctively how to dance to it, loving the fresh compilation even though you’ve heard both song so many times. It doesn’t work as well on small speakers but if you can take it to 11, it’s sure to get goin’.
So a tip of the trilby to Australia’s Arty Fufkin for turning the Beastie Boys “Shake Your Rump” and Jane’s Addiction “Been Caught Stealing” into Been Caught Stealing Your Rump. (Yes, that’s an illegal file download link right there ;)
Props also go to Live105 for playing this today … and for playing a much wider spectrum of music in the last 12 months.
