As It Turns Out It Was Something In Between

So the billboard I showed pictures of (and gushed over) is actually part of a local art project. Though the project is very cool - wonderful really - it is commisioned and city approved, so it was not nearly the prank I guessed it was. So though it’s very much in the style of Rigo, it’s nothing like Banksy or any real person statement at all.

The project is called Double Take Billboards and they have posted blow-ups of neighborhood images onto large billboard spots. They are really quite nice in their dreamy and simple composition. Most are much more pleasant than the gritty camera picture I wrote of.

I should have known Clear (as in mud) Channel would not have let it stay up for so long….

Artists Felipe Dulzaides, in conjunction with New Langton Arts produced the work. Funding came from the Bay Area’s excellent Creative Work Fund and, you guessed it, Clear (as in mud) Channel Outdoors.

So it’s art and I like that. Billboards are usually rough on the eyes and these are wonderful. But it’s a bit hard to see some of our traditional street canvases being co-opted by companies, even if it’s just by association.
